WWF's Earth Hour
With less than a month to go, the people of Milton Keynes, its businesses and schools are being asked to support WWF's Earth Hour on Saturday 28 March this year.

WWF is encouraging everyone around the world to turn off their lights for one hour, from 8.30-9.30pm to show global support for action against climate change. The city council is being encouraged to switch off the lights of civic buildings and iconic landmarks such as Milton Keynes Bowl and Woburn Abbey are also being urged to take part.

Restaurants and bars can get involved by holding candlelit dinners on the night and residents can also hold their own events such as lights out parties.

Resources available for schools include a climate change information pack, assembly material and classroom activities as well as challenges for pupils to sign up to.

Colin Butfield, head of campaigns at WWF UK, said: "We want to create a groundswell of support and this is a chance for the people of Milton Keynes to be part of a global action on climate change.

"There are all sorts of things people can do on the night from simply turning their lights off for an hour and registering their support on our website to hosting a lights out party. This is the year for world leaders to agree a global deal to tackle climate change so a billion people across the globe turning off their lights sends a loud and clear message to politicians that they must make it happen."

WWF's Earth Hour aims to inspire a billion people in 1,000 cities to show global support for action on climate change. So far 538 cities in 75 countries have signed up including Bristol and Birmingham in the UK. Many iconic landmarks will be switching off their lights such as the Forth Bridge in Edinburgh, the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, Table Mountain in Cape Town, Sydney Opera House and Paris' Eiffel Tower. Richard Branson, Nelly Furtado and Archbishop Desmond Tutu have all lent their voices to Earth Hour's global call for action on climate change.

This event is the launch of WWF's campaign to get world leaders to agree targets to cut carbon emissions when they meet at the UN climate talks in Copenhagen in December.
