Saturday 24th October 2009
Moon Day

THIS EVENT IS NOW FULLY BOOKED

On 24th October, we present an evening of Moon based astronomy here at the Open University. Running from 5:30pm until late in the evening, come and watch a screening of the award winning movie “In the Shadow of the Moon” with an introduction from co-producer and assistant director Dr. Chris Riley.  After the showing Chris will be available to answer your questions about this film.

We will also have some hands-on activities running after the movie screening. This will involve learning about meteorites including handling and looking at them using a geological microscope. Meteorite experts and astronomers from the OU will be available to assist you and answer any of your questions.

When you’re ready to go outside and see the night sky for real, we will (weather permitting!) move across to the Open University's George Abell observatory, for an evening of guided observing, where the night sky will be revealed in all its glory through telescopes, binoculars, and the naked eye.

The event will be held on campus at the Open University, in Walton Hall, Milton Keynes. The presentations will be held in the luxurious 200-seat Berrill lecture theatre, with the observing session carried out inside and around the George Abell observatory. Some hot drinks and nibbles will be provided during the afternoon, but no main meal will be provided in the evening - if you think you might get hungry, please feel free to bring your own snacks! Please note that eating and drinking is not allowed inside the lecture theatre.

The observing session will be weather dependent - but if it is clear, remember to bring plenty of warm clothing (including hats, coats, gloves and scarves) - standing in the dark gets pretty cold after a while!

This will be a ticketed event, so booking in advance is required. Book early to avoid disappointment!
