Evolution, the blind gambler

This event has changed date and venue

This talk will provide more insight into how evolution works, expanding on the simplified stories that are used. It covers topics such as: why to understand evolution you have to use probabilities rather than certainties, how likely it is that beneficial mutations get lost within the first couple of generations, why evolutions leads species down dead ends, and how these processes have lead to some "stupid design" solutions.
The talk compares evolution to, amongst other things, poker and the audiences journey to the room in order to explain the principals.

This talk is given by Thomas Morgan of UCL:

I'm an interdisciplinary scientist. I did my undergrad degree in Zoology at Edinburgh where I mainly concentrated on population genetic, cognition and animal behaviour. I then returned to London to do a masters at CoMPLEX (UCL) where I learnt about how maths, computing and physics could be used in biology. I then started my PhD in molecular biology (again at UCL) which I am just about to complete.

This talk is part of the "How Did we get Here?" day which has changed date and move to University Centre on Silbury Boulevard. How Did we get Here? will run from 11am-3pm.  This talk will take place at 2pm.
