With so many accountants advertising their services to the general public, how does an individual decide how to find the right accounting firm for either their personal or business needs? Accountants are much more than just the person who helps an individual to fill out their tax forms each year. The choice of a good accountant can be an important strategic step towards financial success.

The choice of an accountant is in many ways a personal choice. Whilst the skill of accounting is a qualification that is taught consistently in universities, the approach of an accountant will vary according to their character. Finding an accountant who you can talk to and feel confident to share what can at times be very personal information is essential when choosing your accountant or accounting firm.

Factors Involved in Choosing an Accountant
The choice of an accountant is for many people a financial choice. The variation in cost can be an important factor in deciding between services, but if you are searching for value for money, paying slightly more for a service that offers more appropriate support for your personal needs may be a better long term choice.

Some firms offer ongoing support throughout the tax year when paying for your income tax to be completed. For individuals this may not be a necessity, but for small business and home business operators, particularly those who are in the early years of building their businesses this may be an essential service.

Other firms offer the convenience of record keeping aids that make record keeping of expenses and payments easy to both document and store. Accessing these often freely provided tools rather than needing to buy them from a stationary store, may make the extra cost of one accountant more attractive than the slightly cheaper rate of another.

The type of business you are operating and the type of accounting practices offered by different accountancy firms may also play an important role in determining your choice of a firm to meet your needs. Some accountants may have little knowledge of international tax laws or corporate tax laws, but may have excellent skills in personal tax returns. The business owner, particularly those who are involved in larger business or multinational business ventures would require the services of a larger firm that can advise on more complex tax requirements.

Reputation is an important factor in choosing any product or service and choice of an accountant is no exception. Choosing an accountant that is referred to you by other friends or businesses is often a good method of finding a good accountant with a proven record of providing excellent service and good returns. Professional organisations and other networks may also help to provide lists of suitable accountants.

Remember to use someone who uses up to date software too, something like sage 50 accounts or sage 50 accounts professional is ideal, these are the products which used to be known as sage line 50.

Selecting your Accountant
Once you have a list of suitable accountants you should visit them where possible to determine if you feel you can build a business relationship with them. Asking them general questions about how they operate and what support they can offer your business as well as your own personal financial affairs will soon guide you to the firm or accountant you will feel most comfortable working with.

As with any business these days, one key way of getting business, or in this case keeping yourself in acting work is to network at every opportunity. When I say networking I don’t mean attending organised networking lunches, I’ve been to a couple of those and it was full of sales people all expecting to walk out the door with orders in their hand, Oh well, you live and learn. I mean making industry contacts, in the acting world that is just as important as any other. Yes keep going to auditions, but the more you socialise with people in the music, theatre, TV and film industries, the more opportunities are likely to come your way. Just because you met someone at a production or gig which you didn’t get the role in, still make sure you have their details, and more importantly make sure they have yours.

I had, well, still have a good friend who you will have probably seen on TV from time to time, he’s no A Lister, but he does get a fair few scenes these days in quite a wide range of TV shows, from comedy to drama and even as an extra in a science documentary scene. Anyway, he loves to tell the story (so I’d better get it right in case he ever reads this) about the time he was after a part in a local theatre production and he lived pretty close to the theatre back in those days, he went for the audition and didn’t get the part he wanted, but did get friendly with a couple of other people who were there on the day, I forget if they were cast or crew, but certainly were not involved in the casting. Rehearsals had begun and just before the show was due to open, someone got hit by the proverbial bus, it turns out that someone he had been talking to about 2 months prior remembered that he had played a very similar part before and still had his contact details, passed them on the the producer and in no time he had the job. It was for a part in a stage show which then toured the country for a considerable time, so he really landed on his feet.

So how do you make sure you are always networking in the acting world? Firstly you need to know your own objectives, do you want to do odd extras work, is your passion to tour the world in a theatre company or would you like to be the next Ian Beale in Eastenders (OK probably not the best example, but the actor Adam has been in it for a very long time and will most likely continue to be). Make sure you are able to articulate your objectives in a clear and concise way. So you need to always make sure that if there is a show opening that you could get an invite to, you do, is there a film festival you could attend, a music event, or perhaps even just the opening of a gallery, whatever it is, be there, socialise and don’t be a wallflower.

And don’t forget bands off all sorts have auditions for new musicians too, they don’t have to be a famous band already, but if they have potential go along and audition. they could be rock, pop or a local party band, but regardless, it’s all good experience of playing in a group.

That being said, don’t just rely on networking, especially at the start of your acting career, you absolutely must continue to attend auditions, scour the industry press for any suitable casting calls and television auditions you can apply for if you are to find suitable acting jobs. The To Be Seen site has audition listings for many of the major cruise liners, bands and musicians and TV channels including the BBC, Sky and ITV.

I have just been involved in a rather comical discussion on one of the SEO forums. Some poor guy was employed by an seo company, who it appears were taking on any client they could find and promising the earth, well, first page placements to be specific, and not only were they making these promises, but on very competitive keywords.

So this guy had his manager asking him what they could do to improve their clients serp’s (search engine result positions), and he in turn had come to the forum looking for advice, my overwhelming urge was to suggest he find a job working for a professional firm, although I think he was abroad, so wasn’t going to find a good uk seo company to work for anyway.

So people were suggesting all the usual things such as building good links, blog comments and adapting on page elements, to which he replied to every single one that hye had been doing it for months already. Eventually someone asked which keywords he was struggling to optimise the website for “the main one is real estate” he said, then listed a load of other highly competitive terms too.

It turns out that the boss had taken the client on without doing any keyword research and promised them top page placements, so the lesson from this story is that if you don’t do thorough research first, both on your competitors and in general around the given keywords, you may never get the results you need to make them pay. This is why smaller companies always go after the long tails, Humph, even I knew that!

We are proud to announce that we have teamed up with Eco Seo for any search engine optimisation services for our clients. Because this is a completely different skill set to design we made the decision to work with a specialist in their particular field. It was important to us that we worked with a UK SEO Company, seeing as all our customers are based in England and in the vast majority of cases only need to be found in the UK search engines.

Eco Seo have a wealth or experience in optimisation projects for a broad range of business sectors, they also have experience in pay per click and internet marketing, so will be our first point of call for anyone who needs to increase the traffic to their website.

Working alongside them we can together optimise the pages of your website to increase the number of visitors who become a buying customer. By analysing the way people enter, leave and move around a website, we can identify the pages which are working well and those which aren’t, then adapt them accordingly.

We can also develop micro sites, so if you are launching a new product, you may need a website which is totally dedicated to that product, again this can be fully optimised to make sure you reach your goals.

Eco SEO are a Wiltshire SEO Company based close to Marlborough, although they already service clients from all around the UK, so whilst we usually design for more local companies, our combined skills are available to companies from all around the country.

If you need a new website, or a redesign of an existing site, combined with an effective, results driven search optimisation campaign, get in touch as we will be able to help.

Bespoke Design or Template Based

When designing a website, one of the first and most important considerations is the total cost of developing the site. For larger businesses this isn’t too much of a problem as larger budgets can be allocated, however, for small and start up companies, this can be a considerable cost, but there are options available to keep the price down.

If you want a website which is 100% unique, then you will have to face the fact that designing a bespoke site will take the designer considerable time to develop, test and optimise, but it’s worth bearing in mind that with millions of websites out there already, there is a very good chance that your site will look quite similar to others anyway.

The much cheaper option is to start off with a template, this is a standard design which is available to buy, usually for well under £100, this can then be adapted in a number of ways. In it’s simplest form, the designer can add your logo, pictures and text to it and publish it, hey presto you have a nice looking website for a very small budget. The only down side of this is that there will be potentially another hundred out there worldwide which all look the same, although when you consider how many industries there are out there, the chances of another one using that same template are almost 0.

Alternatively a web designer can also adapt the template, change it’s colour, change various aspects of the design like the margins, navigation, header and footer of the pages, this can make it completely unique without completely re-inventing the wheel, it can also make sure you get the on page seo aspects right. So if you need a new site design on a budget, this can by far be the best option, you are effectively getting the best of both worlds for hundreds of pounds, instead of thousands.
