There is a wide range of interactive workshops available to schools during the festival. These currently include "Rocks from Space", and exploration of the Solar System, workshops on health and obesity, radioactivity, medical imaging and the "Magic of Oxygen".

Sounds Amazing: The Physics of Medical Ultrasound Imaging

This talk aims to build up an understanding of the key features of ultrasound imaging starting with some very simple physics and finishing with a demonstration of Doppler ultrasound. It is suitable for years 11-13.

Radiating Health

Compared to techniques such as X-rays and MRI, the use of radioactive materials for diagnostic imaging is comparatively unknown. However such images can provide very useful information about the function (as opposed to the structure) of all the major organs of the body, and the technique is important in many diagnoses.

Radioactivity gets a bad press. You will read in many newspapers that it makes you glow in the dark or that we get loads of radiation from nuclear power stations. While it can be dangerous, radio activity can also be put to good use.

Rocks and Fossils

This talk and series of demonstrations will introduce pupils to a variety of different rocks and fossils, encouraging them to handle, observe, sort and classify. Simple demonstrations will show how sedimentary rocks form and there will be a worksheet to complete.

Natural Hazards

This talk on natural hazards will discuss earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanoes and tornadoes. We are all aware of these natural processes and know that they can cause untold devastation and loss of human life. But why do they occur and what can we do about reducing their sometimes catastrophic effects? This illustrated talk will include a couple of short practical exercises.

Exploring the Solar System

This workshop for children aged 5-11 looks at the solar system and our place in it. The children discuss the Earth-Moon-Sun system and go on to explore other planets and what they are like. Life in other environments, space travel and the life cycles of stars can all be included if desired.
