Dr Bob MeggsIn 1988 Bob Meggs enrolled with the Open University to study M101 (the old maths foundation course), having little idea of where it would lead. Throughout the following eight years, whilst working full time as a contract draughtsman, OU study became a way of life and he finally graduated with a BSc in Mathematics in 1996. At that time his employment situation was becoming uncertain and the opportunity arose to study at the University of Bath for a Master of Engineering in Electronics and Communications Engineering, which he completed in 2001. His final year project investigated the use of GPS signals to map the ionisation in the Earth's upper atmosphere for correcting satellite navigation systems. Whilst working on this project he was offered the funding to extend the work as a PhD project. Since completing his PhD in 2004 he has been working on modelling the effects of scintillation on navigation satellite signals in the auroral regions, and has developed a system for imaging the ionosphere in real time over the UK. Having taken an unorthodox route into research, he is keen to communicate science and engineering in an accessible way to the general public.
