Dr Peter MillicanDr Peter Millican studied at the University of Oxford, in Mathematics and then Philosophy and Theology. After taking the BPhil in Philosophy he taught briefly at Glasgow, and in 1985 was appointed to a joint lectureship in Computing and Philosophy at Leeds (subsequently taking a PhD in Philosophy and a research MSc in Computing). At Leeds his teaching focused largely on making Computer Science accessible to non-specialists, for which he developed a range of educational software to introduce programming, computer theory, and artificial intelligence (freely available from www.philocomp.net). His principal research, however, has always been in Philosophy, and especially on topics in epistemology and philosophy of religion associated with the great sceptic David Hume (see www.davidhume.org for details). In 2005 he was appointed Fellow in Philosophy at Hertford College, Oxford, and also became co-editor of the international journal /Hume Studies/. He recently completed an edition of Hume's /Enquiry concerning Human Understanding/, a manifesto for science and against superstition (Oxford World's Classics, June 2007).
