Paul joined the Open University in 2005 as a lecturer. Before that he was a postdoctoral researcher at the Information Technology Research Institute (ITRI) of the University of Brighton.

He completed his PhD. Thesis titled Logic, Information and Conversation at Eindhoven University of Technology, on formal models of accents, bridging anaphors and answers. He is specifically interested in proof-theoretic analyses of the meaning of natural language expressions, i.e., Proof-Theoretic Semantics. In addition to teaching Data, Computing and Information (M150) and tutoring Postgraduate research students (M180), he also spends time reviewing for journals and funding agencies including the National Science Foundation (NSF), the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and the Economic and Social Research Council ESRC.

Since 1994 Paul has contributed to several journals and technical reports including a recent collaboration with Dr Helmut Prendinger at the National Institute of Informatics in Tokoyo.
